Strategy 9: Culture Studies

Next Generation Sunshine State Standards

SS.5.G.2.1 Describe the push-pull factors (economy, natural hazards, tourism, climate, physical features) that influenced boundary changes within the United States. 
Common Core Standards:
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.5.1c Pose and respond to specific questions by making comments that contribute to the discussion and elaborate on the remarks of others.
ESOL Standards:
18) Create a positive classroom environment to accommodate the various learning styles and cultural backgrounds of students.

STEP BY STEP

  1. Find an age appropriate project
  2. Set up the goals and parameters
  3. Make expectations clear
  4. Plan the culminating activity
  5. Assess student growth and progress
  6. Add technology
A great way to incorporate this strategy is to have a discussion about what makes up a culture, what makes people different, and what makes people the same. Discuss how each culture is different in the way they get along. Then have students research their own culture. Have students find out facts about their culture to present to the glass. Have students create a power point with visuals and facts about their culture. Then have students share with the class what they learned about their own culture, that they did not know before. The teacher can assess student progress, by the information given and the students response to what they learned. The student can fill out graphic organizer that they can use to help create their power point, or share the graphic organizer with the class by uploading it.

Strategy 47: Multimedia Presentations

It is very beneficial of the teacher to use multimedia resources. Students can learn a lot through this type of instruction, because the student is able to have a clear view of the methods the teacher is using to solve math problems through a document camera or smart board. The student can advance as well when discovering new types of media types and ways to present their knowledge. When the student uses technology to demonstrate what they've learned, the teacher can use this as a way of assessing the students comprehension of the subject. There are many types of media to use, video clips, overhead projector, audiotapes, and much more, and these can be very rewarding to both the student and the teacher. This strategy is ideal for math presentations.

Strategy 37: Advance Organizers

Next Generation Sunshine State Standards

MACC.K.MD.2.3 Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count. 
Common Core Standards
  • CCSS.Math.Content.K.MD.A.2 Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has “more of”/“less of” the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.

ESOL Standards
11) Apply essential strategies for developing and integrating the four language skills of listening composition, oral communication, reading, and writing.

STEP BY STEP

Advance organizers are used to help the student make connections between the material that is to be learned and existing knowledge. There are two types of organizers to be used. An expository organizer is used when the material that is being learned is quite unfamiliar. An comparative organizer can be used to match material that is somewhat familiar to material that has just been learned. It is important to know the age of the student, developmental level, and existing knowledge.

Depend less upon concrete props as they get older, English learners will still need some of the supports named for preoperational students for language development; activities like 20 questions, debate, oral readings, Venn diagrams with words can now be used
Abstract logical middle and high school
Learners’ dependence on concrete props decreases, they are able to go beyond the “here and now”, English learners will still need concrete props to demonstrate new vocabulary,; activities like debates, use of biographies, current events, interviews are now appropriate.

Strategy 38: Learning Strategy Instruction

Next Generation Sunshine State Standards:

MACC.4.N.F.1.1 Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction (n × a)/(n × b) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions. 

Common Core Standards:
  • CCSS.Math.Content.4.NF.C.5 Express a fraction with denominator 10 as an equivalent fraction with denominator 100, and use this technique to add two fractions with respective denominators 10 and 100.2 For example, express 3/10 as 30/100, and add 3/10 + 4/100 = 34/100.
ESOL Standards:
6) Apply current and effective ESOL teaching methodologies in planning and delivering instruction to LEP/ELL students.

Learning strategy instruction is used to help students monitor themselves when doing their work. They can do this through self evaluation sheets, questionnaires, and an answer checking method. The teacher needs to first give the student ways to check their own work. For example, MacDonald's golden arches helps the students check their answer by letting them know if the fraction is equivalent or not. 
Instead of making the x in the middle of the fractions, the student will draw McDonald's golden arches in it's place. This strategy helps the student remember this method of checking to see if fractions are equivalent or not.

Strategy 45: Microselection

Next Generation Sunshine State Standards:

MACC.2.MD.2.5 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve word problems involving lengths that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as drawings of rulers) and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. 
Common Core Standards:
  • CCSS.Math.Content.2.NBT.B.5 Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
ESOL Standards:
17) Evaluate, adapt and employ appropriate instructional materials, media, and technology for ESOL in the content areas at elementary, middle and high school levels.

STEP BY STEP

  1. Introduce the concept of microselection
  2. Model the identification of key words
  3. Guide students in practicing microselction
  4. Pair students for additional practice
  5. discuss the procedure
When integrating this strategy into math, the teacher will explain that microselection is finding the key words in a sentence, passage, or story that help to know the main idea or instructions. The teacher must explain that it is impossible to remember every word that is written, so it is important to remember the key words in order to remember the main idea. This strategy will work well with math word problems. For instance the key words found in some math word problems are, total, sum, each, less, more. These words give the students clues to whether they should divide, multiply, subtract, or add.
