Strategy 32: Read, Pair, Share

Next Generation Sunshine State Standards

LA.2.1.7.2 The student will determine the author's purpose in text and ask clarifying questions (e.g., why, how) if meaning is unclear; 
Common Core Standards
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, andhow to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
ESOL Standards
11) Apply essential strategies for developing and integrating the four language skills of listening composition, oral communication, reading, and writing.

STEP BY STEP

  1. Introduce the question words
  2. Model each step of the strategy
  3. Model how to work with a partner
  4. Model the modifying of questions
  5. Pair the students
  6. Discuss the assignment
For this activity partners read together, stopping after each paragraph. The idea is to stop at each answer of the "who, what, when , where, and how" questions related to the book. When partners cannot find the answer, they reread the paragraph or section. Model for the students how to modify answers to the "who, what, when, where, and how" questions, when the answer is not clearly specified.
