ESOL STRATEGIES FOR SCIENCE!!! Using Indoor Labs

Indoor Labs

Next Generation Sunshine State Standards

SC.4.P.8.4

Investigate and describe that magnets can attract magnetic materials and attract and repel other magnets.

Common Core Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.4.4
  • Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

ESOL Standards

8.  Select and develop appropriate ESOL content according to student levels of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, taking into account: (1) basic interpersonal communicative skills (BICS), and (2) cognitive academic language proficiency skills (CALPS) as they apply to the ESOL curriculum.

Indoor labs are structured investigations and experiments that take place inside. Indoor labs consist of materials, models, and other equipment. Even though indoor labs mainly take place inside, data can be collected from outside. They are great for following up field labs. They can be used to analyze data from computer programs and much more. Students learn best when they are able to apply what they've learned and that is the purpose of indoor labs.

How to design an Indoor Lab

  • Decide how you are going to structure the lab session
  • Find out what kind of follow up activities are appropriate
  • Help students work together in groups
  • Decide basic and specialized lab equipment
