Next Generation Sunshine State Standards
- CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 1–3 above.)
11) Apply essential strategies for developing and integrating the four language skills of listening composition, oral communication, reading, and writing.
Writing conferences is a one on on teaching strategy that helps students think about what they are writing. These individual conferences with students lasting no more that 5-7 minutes can really make the difference in the way a student approaches writing. The teacher helps the student think about important questions that the student needs to ask themselves before finishing their work. The teacher presents questions for the student to ask like, "What else do I want or need to say?", "How can I make it better?", "What will the readers ask the author?", "Does this make sense?".
This strategy is important because it gets the students interacting with their own writing. A self assessment survey may also be beneficial to the teacher and the student to help understand how the student is feels when they write.
