Common Core Standards
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.5 With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, and editing. (Editing for conventions should demonstrate command of Language standards 1-3 up to and including grade 3 here.)
ESOL Standards
7) Locate and acquire relevant resources in ESOL methodologies.

Theme poems allow the student to choose from five different categories to write about.
The student then chooses a picture.
Once the student has chosen a picture, the student writes words that remind them of the picture.
Last, the student writes a poem using the words that they chose.
This activity serves as a tool to help students focus on a particular topic. Students are prompted to brainstorm, write, and revise their poems which enforces the writing process. Students are then able to print out their own unique decorative poem.
