ESOL STRATEGIES FOR SCIENCE!!! Strategy 39

Strategy 39: Integrated Curriculum Projects

Next Generation Sunshine State Standards:

SC.4.E.6.3

Recognize that humans need resources found on Earth and that these are either renewable or nonrenewable.

Common Core Standards:

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.3.3
Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

ESOL Standards:

9.  Develop experiential and interactive literacy activities for LEP/ELL students, using current information on linguistic and cognitive processes.

STEP BY STEP
  1. Identify an authentic project opportunity
  2. Relate the project to grade level and ESL standards
  3. Identify the class goals
  4. Establish working groups and their assignments
  5. Integrate learning
A way to apply this to science would be to first discuss to the students the importance of a clean environment. And then present an environmental issue in the local area. Once students have talk about what they can do to help the environment stay clean. Set up a field trip to go and put their thoughts to action. There are plenty of places that would be willing to let students volunteer for educational purposes.
