ESOL STRATEGIES FOR MATH!!! Use White Boards

Use White Boards!

Next Generation Sunshine State Standards

MACC.4.OA.1.1Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 × 7 as a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations.

Common Core Standards
  • CCSS.Math.Content.4.OA.A.1 Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 × 7 as a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations.

ESOL Standards
12) Apply content-based ESOL approaches to instruction.

This strategy helps support students active involvement with the whole class. This strategy also helps the teacher monitor the students proficiency by going around the whole calls to observe their responses.

Steps:

  • Give each student a a whiteboard dry erase marker, and an eraser.
  • As you ask questions, have each student write his/her answer on the whiteboard and hold it up for your review.
  • plan future instruction and/or to form flexible small group instruction for reteaching or enrichment.
  • Plan to make the use of whiteboards an every day strategy in your classroom.
An activity that would work well with this strategy is to work on times tables. The teacher can use the smart board to show different times tables while each student races to get the right answer first. The teacher can have a list of all of the names of the students participating and tally each student who shoes their answer first. At the end the student who receives the most tallies can get a prize of some sort.
