Next Generation Sunshine State Standards
- CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.1 Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.
14) Plan and evaluate instructional outcomes, recognizing the effects of race, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and religion on the results.
Students often struggle with persuasive writing assessments because they have no "real" purpose or authentic audience. It is also true that when students write or talk about something they really want, they put more effort into making the argument more rational. They often pay attention to writing style, content, spelling, and other mechanics. So instead of making students write about something they are not passionate about, let them choose what topic they wish to pursue. This will in turn give them the opportunity to develop better writing skills.
Ways to help students master persuasive writing skills
- Introduce various persuasive speeches and writing in the media (e.g. newspapers, magazines, and television). Have students analyze the authors words, phrases, repetitions, and techniques.
- Break down the speech into its elements. Find at least three pieces of evidences that supports the writers argument.
- Have students find out current beliefs regarding the issue, by Interviewing at least 5 people. Gather facts, and create a graph of the patterns in peoples arguments.
- Find opportunities for students to write a persuasive letter to their family, friends, or community, about current issues discussed.
- Have peers review letters and speeches to analyze and give constructive criticism to make the piece better.
- Challenge students to differentiate fact and opinion from an article
- Encourage students to respond to Youtube videos or blogs and maybe create their own websites to debate bigger issues, and reach a broader audience.
