12) Apply content-based ESOL approaches to instruction.
This a vocabulary comprehension strategy used to familiarize students with the vocabulary of a new topic of a book. Teacher give students a list of vocabulary words or concepts from the reading material. Students categorize the different words into topics.
How to use concept sort:
- If you are teaching a concept such as rough/smooth, gather 10-15 objects or pictures that have rough and smooth surfaces. If you are teaching vocabulary relevant to the book, gather 10-15 words from the book.
- While working individually, in small groups, or as a whole class, have the students sort all of the words, objects, and pictures into categories.
- Discuss the categories within the groups. Describe why certain objects or things, where placed within certain groups.
