ESOL Standards:
12) Apply content-based ESOL approaches to instruction.

This a vocabulary comprehension strategy used to familiarize students with the vocabulary of a new topic of a book. Teacher give students a list of vocabulary words or concepts from the reading material. Students categorize the different words into topics.

How to use concept sort:

  • If you are teaching a concept such as rough/smooth, gather 10-15 objects or pictures that have rough and smooth surfaces. If you are teaching vocabulary relevant to the book, gather 10-15 words from the book.
  • While working individually, in small groups, or as a whole class, have the students sort all of the words, objects, and pictures into categories.
  • Discuss the categories within the groups. Describe why certain objects or things, where placed within certain groups.

Watch concept sorts in action

The following example introduces students to a book about discovering plants:
  1. Introduce and discuss the following pre-selected terms:

    flowersleaveswatergardens
    weedsforestsairtrees
    sunlightsoilrootsstems
  2. Then, ask students to sort the terms according to the following categories OR ask the students to sort the cards in a way that is meaningful to them and follow up to check their understanding of the concepts.
    • Types of plants
    • Parts of a plant
    • Where plants grow
    • What plants need to grow
