ESOL Standards

6.  Apply current and effective ESOL teaching methodologies in planning and delivering instruction to LEP/ELL students.

STEP BY STEP

  1. Choose a Topic to use in introducing basic research skills
  2. Prepare a blank KWL plus chart
  3. Introduce the KWL chart in a group lesson
  4. Provide students with book and resources to read about the topic
  5. Demonstrate how to add new information to the L column of the KWL chart and make corrections
  6. Introduce the data chart as a way to organize the information they are gathering
  7. Demonstrate how to use the data chart to organize and write a report on the topic
A great way to apply this to science, is to have students choose a book about their favorite animal. The student will write about what they know in the K column, what they want to know in the W column, and what they learned from the book in the L Column.
For their data chart, they can ask and answer questions like, "How does it look?", "What does it eat?",  "Where does it live?," and "What are its natural enemies?".
