ESOL STRATEGIES FOR READING!!! Strategy 2

It is imperative that teachers constantly teach vocabulary and concepts that will support understanding when teaching ESOL students. Once ESOL students have an understanding of the letter sounds for the English language, it is time to teach vocabulary words and their meaning, so that students can become more fluent in the English language and thus become more able to receive and learn other content information taught in the English language. Reading is a major part of learning all content area subjects. It is almost impossible to learn about math, science, and social studies, without reading skills or the ability to build new vocabulary. And furthermore vocabulary is a key component of reading. So by using strategies, that will help build this foundational skill, the teacher paves the way for learning all educational concepts.

Florida Next Generation Sunshine State Standard:

LA.3.1.6.1 The student will use new vocabulary that is introduced and taught directly;

Common Core Standards
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.3.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills
 in decoding words.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.3.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

ESOL Standards:
6) Apply current and effective ESOL teaching methodologies in planning and delivering instruction to LEP/ELL students.

8) Select and develop appropriate ESOL content according to student levels of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, taking into account: (1) basic interpersonal communicative skills (BICS), and (2) cognitive academic language proficiency skills (CALPS) as they apply to the ESOL curriculum.

Strategy 2: Preview/ Review

STEP BY STEP

  • Plan and gather materials- plan your lesson, identifying key concepts and vocabulary. Gather any realia, visuals, or support materials that will help students understand the concepts and vocabulary needed to comprehend the lesson.
  • Introduce key vocabulary and concepts- Introduce the important vocabulary and key concepts during the preview section of the lesson using support materials you have gathered. The focus in this section of the lesson is not on actually teaching the lesson, but on familiarizing students will key vocabulary and concepts.
  • Teach the lesson - Teach the actual lesson, referring to the support material and key vocabulary already introduced during the preview, whenever possible.
  • Review vocabulary and concepts- Review the key vocabulary and concepts, encouraging the students to demonstrate understanding by referring to the support materials.
  • Provide additional practice- Create a bulletin board or learning center that allows the students to practice the key concepts further through use of the support materials used in the lesson.
The support materials that teacher need to provide to the student when using this strategy are:

Realia- foods, household objects, animals, costumes of the period, music of the period.
Visuals- Tansparencies made from photos, magazine pictures, line drawings, art prints, maps.
Activities- Role playing, illustrating, sorting and labeling, lesson word wals, reader's theater, creating display boards, creading board games.

This strategy helps ESOL students better understand what they read, through previewing vocabulary words being taught in the lesson, and then reviewing them after the lesson. Teaching this concept to ESOL students is what will help them in the future, by ingraining the importance that previewing and reviewing has on comprehension when reading.

Here is graphic organizer that should help when teaching this concept:
