ESOL STRATEGIES FOR MATH!!! Strategy 21

Strategy 21: Language Framework Planning

Next Generation Sunshine State Standards:

MACC.1.G.1.1 Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes. 
Common Core Standards:
CCSS.Math.Content.1.G.A.1 Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes
ESOL Standards:
15) Evaluate, select, and employ appropriate instructional materials, media, and technology for ESOL at elementary, middle, and high school levels.

STEP BY STEP

  1. Identify language objectives
  2. Identify and model problematic structures
  3. Plan an Instructional sequence
  4. Assess and document student progress
  5. Add Technology
In order for the teacher to organize a lesson using this strategy, he/she must first identify the academic language necessary for students learn about the subject.Then the teacher will plan activities and games that will support the use of the language in multiple functions. This strategy supports both the language and content of the lesson.
