ESOL STRATEGIES FOR SOCIAL STUDIES!!! Strategy 41

Strategy 41: Dictoglos

Next Generation Sunshine State Standards

SS.5.C.3.4 Describe the amendment process as defined in Article V of the Constitution and give examples.
Common Core Standards:
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.5.3 Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on specific information in the text.
ESOL Standards:
13) Evaluate, design and employ instructional methods and techniques appropriate to learners' socialization and communication needs, based on knowledge of language as a social phenomenon.

STEP BY STEP

  1. Select an appropriate piece of text
  2. Reread the text orally
  3. Pair to re-create the text
  4. Work in groups of four
  5. Read the recreated text
For this social studies activity, the teacher would read the Constitution aloud at a normal speaking pace while the students listen. Then the teacher will read the text twice more, but the students will jot down the key words and phrases.Students will then work in pairs to recreate as much of and as closely to the text as possible. While working in groups of four two pairs meet together and pool their recreations of the text to reconstruct it more completely. Then one member of each group will read the groups recreation of the text. There will be a comparison of the recreated texts to see which one matches the closest to the Constitution.

ESOL STRATEGIES FOR SOCIAL STUDIES!!! Strategy 25

Strategy 25: Sorting Activities

Next Generation Sunshine State Standards:

SS.5.C.3.1 Describe the organizational structure (legislative, executive, judicial branches) and powers of the federal government as defined in Articles I, II, and III of the U.S. Constitution.
Common Core Standards:
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.5.5 Compare and contrast the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in two or more texts.
ESOL Standards
18) Create a positive classroom environment to accommodate the various learning styles and cultural backgrounds of students.

STEP BY STEP

  1. Identify skills to practice in sorting mode
  2. Explain the activity
  3. Set up the routine and requirements
  4. Assess the students' progress and understanding
A way to apply this strategy to social studies is to helps students sequence the order of the legislative process. Students need to use manipulatives in order to help them remember, so a great way to help them remember is to make a word ring that has the ten steps to the legislative process. Students can scan through these cards to help recall the process anytime they forget. Another activity for students to use is the online legislative process: Congress At Work activity. This activity gives the students hint if they need it, and lets them sort it as many times as they wish.  As well, the Branches of Government Game.

ESOL STRATEGIES FOR SOCIAL STUDIES!!! Strategy 42

Strategy 42: Generation interaction between schemata and text

Next Generation Sunshine State Standards:

SS.5.A.5.3 Explain the significance of historical documents including key political concepts, origins of these concepts, and their role in American independence.
Common Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.1d Provide a concluding statement or section related to the opinion presented

ESOL Standards:
10) Analyze student language and determine appropriate instructional strategies, using knowledge of phonology, morphology, syntax semantics, and discourse.

STEP BY STEP

  1. Identify appropriate text for GIST
  2. Group the students
  3. Demonstrate the strategy
  4. Discuss summary sentences
  5. Read and summarize paragraph by paragraph
  6. Read and compare summary sentences
This strategy is great for students interacting and collaborating with each other. After the teacher has selected the text to be read, and places the students into groups. The students read small sections silently and then work together to generate a sentence that summarizes the whole paragraph. Each student then writes that sentence on their piece of paper, so that in the end they have an entire summary of the text.

A way to incorporate this strategy into social studies. Have groups read sections of the Declaration of Independence. Have students summarize each section.

Strategy 40: Attribute Charting

Next Generation Sunshine State Standards:

SS.4.G.1.4 Interpret political and physical maps using map elements (title, compass rose, cardinal directions, intermediate directions, symbols, legend, scale, longitude, latitude).
Common Core Standards:
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.4.4c Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.

ESOL Standards:
18) Create a positive classroom environment to accommodate the various learning styles and cultural backgrounds of students

STEP BY STEP

  1. Choose a concept to chart (Geography)
  2. Discuss attributes or traits
  3. Explore the materials   (Map)
  4. Use the charted material
  5. Add technology

This is a chart that students would complete while looking at a map. Each symbol means something different. The teacher can clearly document the students understanding and knowledge about the continents. After a while of filling out charts like this, the student should be able to recall facts about the physical traits each continent has. This chart can be easily made from programs like Microsoft Excel and can be saved as well as printed out.
